You may think that starting a family should be the easiest thing in the world but for many couples the joy of expecting a baby does not come as quickly as they hoped. It is a worrying time and poses many medical and lifestyle questions you might have never previously contemplated. In this article I’ve offered comprehensive answers to six frequently asked questions.

How long should we try to conceive before seeking medical advice?

This really depends on you and your partner’s health. It is always worth seeing your GP before starting to try. Your GP will ensure that you have been immunised against German measles (Rubella), and discuss lifestyle changes that you may need to make to maximise your chances and ensure that you will be as healthy as possible through pregnancy. Your GP will also be able to gather information about you and your partner and decide if you should be referred early on to a gynaecologist.

Generally as long as you and your partner are in good health, then you should try for about one year before seeking medical help. This is because most couples (80%) will fall pregnant within the first year, and 95% within two years without any medical intervention.

What sort of investigations should we expect to have done after one year?

After one year of trying, it is worth looking into why there maybe a delay. Your GP should be able to organise the basic investigations for you and your partner. The most important tests are a blood test to check that you are ovulating, and that your partner’s semen analysis is normal.

The ovulation blood test is best done 7 days before your next period starts. If you have a 28 day cycle then this means that the test is done on day 21. Commercially available urine tests are available and these will detect ovulation (again in 28 day cycle, ovulation should happen around day 14).

The male partner is normally given instructions as to producing the sample. To standardise the test most laboratories advise three days of abstinence from ejaculation. Most fertility centres have rooms where men can produce samples. Should this not be the case, it is best to bring in the sample as quickly as possible. Also try and keep the container as close to body temperature as possible.

My partner is not keen on having a semen test, does it matter?

Yes it does matter. We know that about 30% of all subfertility is due to there being a major problem on the male side. Slightly reduced semen measurements are thought to be contributory in another 15% of cases. It is very important that your partner’s semen is checked very early on in your investigations.

My periods are irregular, does that mean I will never be able to get pregnant?

An irregular cycle is when a woman has a cycle length of more than 35 days. The vast majority of women with irregular periods will fall pregnant. The most common cause of irregular periods is polycystic ovarian syndrome. This condition affects 20% of women, and is normally effectively treatable by weight control and medication.

An irregular cycle often means that ovulation (egg production) is not occurring on a regular basis. However, ovulation can occur occasionally. This explains why women with irregular periods can still conceive without medical aid, but the length of time they need to try is longer than in those women with regular cycles. If medication is required to make you ovulate then the treatment is best monitored by ultrasound.

I am 37 and am worried that I will not be able to conceive.

It is well publicised that the ability to fall pregnant decreases with age. This is because a woman is born with all the eggs she will ever have. The eggs of a 37 year old woman are 37 years old and unfortunately ‘new’ eggs cannot be made. These more mature eggs are less likely to produce a pregnancy, and if a pregnancy does arise then the chances of a miscarriage or a chromosomal abnormality in the pregnancy increase. A woman will go through the menopause when the vast majority of the eggs are used.A blood hormone test on day2 or 3 of your menstrual cycle can provide further information as to your chances.

When population studies are looked at, they do show that women after the age of 37 demonstrate a clear fall in the chances of falling pregnant. It is difficult to establish your individual chance without taking other factors into account, however most women aged 37-39 fall pregnant, it may just take longer than if you were younger.

We have been using hormonal contraception (the pill) for a long time, I have heard that it can cause a decrease in my fertility

The combined oral contraception does not cause infertility. Many women are concerned about a delay in fertility after stopping contraception. There are many different types of contraception and in the majority of cases (including the pill) fertility returns to the age related level quite soon after stopping.

It is worth remembering that the pill is prescribed for many reasons other than contraception. These include irregular, painful or heavy periods. These symptoms may be parts of a wider problem such as polycystic ovarian syndrome or endometriosis that are associated with a decrease in fertility. The pill often masks the symptoms, and once the pill is stopped the symptoms and the underlying problem will return. If your periods are very different from how they were before starting the pill then you should see your GP or gynaecologist.

If you are anxious that you are taking too long to conceive don’t be embarrassed to ask your GP questions relating to your specific circumstances and remember – you and your partner are in this together!

Chakras are energy centers along the midline of the body. According to ancient Vedic philosophy, proper functioning of our body and mind depends on these chakras. From the mind’s eye these chakras are seen as spinning wheels or whirling masses of different colors. Our body is said to have seven primary chakras, each denoted with a different color and responsible for sets of mind and body functions. The exact location of each chakra may vary for different people; however the usual locations are within the body, in a straight line. The following is a list of the 7 chakras, their colors, locations and functions:

The root chakra

Location- At the base of the spine

Color- Burnt red; the color of the earth

Associated body parts- The spinal column, bones, teeth, anus, rectum, prostrate gland, blood etc

Associated feelings- Confidence, trust in life, self-esteem

If the chakra is closed the associated body parts may be affected and can lead to negative feelings of low self-esteem, constant fear of being let-down or cheated, lack of confidence etc. When the chakra is overactive it may make a person overconfident, arrogant and materialistic. An over-active chakra also affects the associated body parts adversely.

The sacral chakra

Location- Below the navel, around the genital area

Color – orange, the color of the setting sun

Associated body parts-Pelvic girdle, re-productive organs, kidneys, bladder, sperm, gastric juice, blood etc

Associated feelings or mental functions- Sexual desires, sexual attraction and emotions

If this chakra is closed one might experience problems in the associated body parts and/or an aversion to physical intimacy, fear of sexual union and/or suffer from a lack of interest in sex. It may also lead to low-self esteem and an emotional paralysis like situation. An overactive sacral chakra can be the cause of an obsession with sex or sexual addictions and/or malfunctioning of the associated body parts.

The solar-plexus

Location-6 inches above the navel

Color- Bright yellow

Associated body parts- Lower back, abdomen, digestive system, stomach, liver, spleen, gall bladder and autonomic nervous system

Associated feelings or mental functions- Will power, determination, view of self, self acceptance, respecting others

If the chakra is closed one may display emotions like self-loathing and lack of willpower. In case it is overactive it may make a person disrespectful, self-centered and callous towards others’ feelings. Either way, the associated body parts will be affected adversely.

The heart chakra

Location- Between the breasts

Color- Red, green or pink

Associated body parts- Heart, upper back, lower area of the lungs, blood and blood circulation, skin etc

Associated feelings or mental functions- Giving and accepting love, emotional security, forgiveness and kindness

A person with a closed heart chakra could be stingy, insecure bitter and/or emotionally cold. An overactive heart chakra can make people feel unloved and unappreciated; such people may go out of their way to help others but also keep unrealistically high expectations from the recipients of their help and love. They are generally bitter and over-possessive. A malfunctioning heart chakra can cause diseases in the associated body parts.

The Throat chakra

Location- The throat area, above the collar bones

Color- Pale blue or silver

Associated body parts- Neck, throat, jaw, ears, voice, trachea, upper lungs, esophagus, arms etc

Associated feelings or mental functions- Self expression, creativity, expressing one’s feelings of love and anger, communication etc

A blocked throat chakra can make a person stifle his/her creativity and self expression; such people are generally poor communicators and may also be too self-critical. A person who is extremely fond of hearing his own voice or doesn’t let other people express their opinions could have an overactive throat chakra. Such people are generally bad listeners and may display arrogance or over-confidence. A malfunctioning throat chakra affects the associated body parts adversely.

The Third-eye

Location- Between the eye brows

Color- Indigo or violet

Associated body parts- face eyes, ears, nose, sinuses, cerebrum, and central nervous system

Associated feelings/mental functions- Creativity, spirituality, connection with inner-self, focus

A closed third eye chakra could lead to creative block. You may feel as if you lack focus and may not be able to concentrate on any task at hand. A person with an overactive third eye chakra is generally organized to the point of being finicky; he/she could be rational to the extent of being cynical and may lack creativity. A malfunctioning of this chakra affects the associated body parts adversely.

The Crown Chakra

Location- Above the crown of the head

Color- Violet or gold

Associated body parts- Cerebrum, pineal gland

Associated feelings/mental functions- High level of consciousness, fulfillment, enlightenment, bliss

People with an open crown chakra are extremely spiritual. All your chakras need to be open for the crown chakra to function normally. Living a superficial life, running away from spiritual truths, prioritizing money and material comforts above love and kindness all indicate towards a malfunctioning of the crown chakra. A completely closed crown chakra could lead to serious problems in the associated body parts.

There are numerous ways to cleanse these chakras, from yoga, crystal therapy and aroma therapy to simple meditation. You can choose the method based on your comfort level and faith.

We’re almost at the age of retirement now and thinking what do I want to do when I grow up? Most of us have worked our whole lives for someone else. What do we have to look forward to after working 20 or 30 years with a company – a gold watch?? Is that all there is?

Are our 401K plans what we expected them to be? Did we put enough away on our own to cover our retirement expenses? Do we have to continue to work past the 65 retirement age? Or are we finding ourselves wanting?

Wanting – desiring – needing?? Wanting more time to enjoy the things we never had time for when we were busy working and raising our families. Desiring to travel and experience different cultures in the world or give our full attention to the hobbies that make us feel fulfilled. Needing to feel free and relaxed without going to the “job”. How can I achieve this?

I’m a baby boomer myself. I was tired of working for someone else. Life and setbacks along the way did not afford me the opportunity to put enough away to retire early while I am still healthy and want to play for the next 20 years instead of work. We are living longer and are healthier than the last generation was at 65.

At this age, it is also a time of reflection. Where have I been and where am I going? Have you found yourself asking those same questions? If so, what did you discover about yourself? I discovered that I was looking for something more meaningful in my life. I wanted to give back to the world. I earned a good living at my “job” but really couldn’t afford to quit because I still had bills to pay. So I asked myself “how I could earn a living, put money aside for retirement, have free time to enjoy all those things that I always wanted to, and help others along the way?”

I came to the conclusion that I could start my own in-home business. But what kind? There are zillions of home businesses out there. One of my priorities was being able to help others achieve their own goals in life. Another priority was to become financially independent myself.

Since I am a student of personal growth already, I looked at this concept as a business. I went on the net and again found numerous options. So research here I come. I did my due diligence. I was looking for something that would resonate for me. A business that would give me all the attributes that was on my “want” list.

I landed on the personal development business. I felt that this type of business could “kill two birds with one stone”. I could give back by mentoring others achieve their goals and become empowered and could earn a great living doing it. But just as important – I am having a blast doing this. I get to work with my husband and build something together. We talk and share more than we have in years. We have a common goal. We are growing in new ways that I never thought possible. Working a personal development program with your partner is so rewarding. Also the excitement of waking up everyday knowing that I can talk to new people not just about how my life has been changed but about how they want their life to change. What are their dreams about? I see such initial excitement from others about the potential of how a personal development program and business will change their lives. When I first began this business I was so full of hope and excitement that I felt like a little kid going to first grade again. Scared but excited at the same time.

We even get to live our dreams of travel. We are going to Hawaii and Rome for our annual conferences this year. Imagine a large group of people with all the same positive thoughts and energy in one room. It is enlightening to say the least. Wow what a deal!!

So, if any of you other baby boomers like me need more out of life, enjoy helping others achieve their dreams, and tired of your “job”, I encourage you to check out a personal development business working your own hours from your own home.

Educational toys are all the rage worldwide as parents begin to realise the importance of early cognitive stimulation. Dr Jean Piaget once said: “Play is a child’s work”. This poses the question – what tools will best equip your child in fulfilling the momentous task of understanding the world?

You are your child’s first teacher. Scary stuff, but there it is. That little being you created, he or she comes into this complex world without a clue. It is up to you to equip them as best you can on their journey to discovery. Living in an age where every single product comes marketed to the hilt| this is no easy task. Type the words “educational toys” into any internet browser and instead of in-depth reports on the correlation between play and motor function you get links to a myriad of toy stores. Sucks to be a consumer sometimes, doesn’t it? You simply can’t go about taking people, blogs or forum posts (or even this article) at their word any more – you have to check it out for yourself. The following should give you a good foundation in your quest for clarity.

As the promised world-wide recession continues to put pressure on consumer purse-strings, the educational toy category is one of a few surprising growth areas in an increasingly saturated toy industry. This can be ttributed to a new-found belief that parents need to supplement school-based learning, especially with regards to an ever-evolving job marketplace. Marketing teams pounce on this kind of development and hence you now find every purveyor of kids’ toys parading the ‘educational benefits’ of their products.

The simple truth is that whether your child plays with illuminated Rubix cubes, small purple elephants, canisters of holy water or pieces of string, they will always learn. All experiences develop the brain. Many years of research have shown that experience creates neural pathways in the brain. Specific types of experiences stimulate various areas of the brain, which in turn corresponds to both physical and mental skills. Thus, you have to decide what specific set of skills you want to develop before you set out to go shopping for kids’ or baby toys.

During your child’s first developmental stage (from birth to 18 months), they take part in their own learning without any real understanding of what is happening. The type of play they engage in at this stage is called ‘sensorimotor play’ and at first involves mainly early reflexes, which then evolves into intentional action. A baby is interested in watching, tasting and touching everything in the strange and wonderful world around him/her. Thus, their first playthings are the senses.  At this stage of development it is important to remember that your child has very limited vision, so invest in toys that are brightly coloured, vary in texture and makes high, tinkly sounds.

From eighteen months onward, your child begins to separate themselves from the the world around them. This is the time to give them lots of opportunity to play, experiment, talk, and enjoy their surroundings. Toddlers are mainly interested in getting around, using their exciting new bodies to learn interesting things. Objects from the ‘real’ world excite them most. Playing with pots, pans, telephones, umbrellas and gardening tools (or their toy equivalent) gives toddlers a sense of accomplishment because they are allowed to use the things grown-ups do.

It is at about the age of three to four that children develop an interest in constructive play. Children at the constructive level manipulate objects and materials in their world to achieve a planned end product, such as a chalk picture, a block tower, or a sand mountain. They enjoy drawing, building with blocks, digging in the sand, and so forth. As children become skilled in manipulating objects and materials in their environment, they also become more skilled in expressing thoughts, ideas, and concepts.

By the age of five, children become interested in structured games that have rules and, at times, have two or more sides. Games with rule play are paramount during the middle childhood years, a time when children’s thought patterns become more logical. It is at this level of play that children begin to realize that activities such as Red Rover, Simon Says, and card games will not work unless everyone follows the same set of rules.

These developmental phases are not set in stone, sometimes they may even overlap. Every child is unique and special. Additionally, if you, as a parent then take the time to observe their actions and development closely it will be easy to anticipate their needs. So, instead of taking a bunch of advertising executives and parenting books at their word, why not trust yourself and your knowledge of your child the next time you go into a toy shop in search of educational toys?

Rich has been researching educational toys and came across some interesting info on kids? toys online.
